One simple way to benefit from the stock market is to buy an index fund. But if you buy good businesses at attractive prices, your portfolio returns could exceed the average market return. For example, Atvexa AB (publ) (STO:ATVEXA B) shareholders have seen the share price rise 91% over three years, well in excess of the market return (47%, not including dividends). However, more recent returns haven't been as impressive as that, with the stock returning just 24% in the last year.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
During three years of share price growth, Atvexa achieved compound earnings per share growth of 8.0% per year. This EPS growth is lower than the 24% average annual increase in the share price. So it's fair to assume the market has a higher opinion of the business than it did three years ago. It is quite common to see investors become enamoured with a business, after a few years of solid progress.

A Different Perspective
Over the last year Atvexa shareholders have received a TSR of 24%. It's always nice to make money but this return falls short of the market return which was about 78% for the year. But the (superior) three-year TSR of 24% per year is some consolation. Even the best companies don't see strong share price performance every year. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 1 warning sign with Atvexa , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
