Afry (STO:AFRY) Is Increasing Its Dividend To SEK6.00

Afry AB (STO:AFRY) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 2nd of May to SEK6.00. The payment will take the dividend yield to 3.6%, which is in line with the average for the industry.

Afry's Future Dividend Projections Appear Well Covered By Earnings

Unless the payments are sustainable, the dividend yield doesn't mean too much. Based on the last payment, Afry was quite comfortably earning enough to cover the dividend. This indicates that a lot of the earnings are being reinvested into the business, with the aim of fueling growth.

The next year is set to see EPS grow by 60.6%. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 36% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.

Dividend Volatility

Although the company has a long dividend history, it has been cut at least once in the last 10 years. Since 2015, the dividend has gone from SEK3.25 total annually to SEK6.00. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 6.3% over that duration. We have seen cuts in the past, so while the growth looks promising we would be a little bit cautious about its track record.

Afry Could Grow Its Dividend

Growing earnings per share could be a mitigating factor when considering the past fluctuations in the dividend. We are encouraged to see that Afry has grown earnings per share at 6.1% per year over the past five years. Earnings are on the uptrend, and it is only paying a small portion of those earnings to shareholders.

Our Thoughts On Afry's Dividend

Overall, this is a reasonable dividend, and it being raised is an added bonus. The payout ratio looks good, but unfortunately the company's dividend track record isn't stellar. This looks like it could be a good dividend stock going forward, but we would note that the payout ratio has been at higher levels in the past so it could happen again.

It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company.
