Why Investors Shouldn't Be Surprised By Impact Coatings AB (publ)'s (STO:IMPC) 26% Share Price Surge

Impact Coatings AB (publ) (STO:IMPC) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 26% after a shaky period beforehand. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 44% in the last twelve months.

After such a large jump in price, given close to half the companies operating in Sweden's Machinery industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 1.8x, you may consider Impact Coatings as a stock to potentially avoid with its 2.6x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.

How Impact Coatings Has Been Performing

Impact Coatings certainly has been doing a good job lately as its revenue growth has been positive while most other companies have been seeing their revenue go backwards. The P/S ratio is probably high because investors think the company will continue to navigate the broader industry headwinds better than most. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.

If you'd like to see what analysts are forecasting going forward, you should check out our free report on Impact Coatings.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The High P/S Ratio?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as high as Impact Coatings' is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 26%. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 115% overall rise in revenue, aided by its short-term performance. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the sole analyst covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 13% each year over the next three years. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 3.1% each year, which is noticeably less attractive.

In light of this, it's understandable that Impact Coatings' P/S sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.

What Does Impact Coatings' P/S Mean For Investors?

Impact Coatings shares have taken a big step in a northerly direction, but its P/S is elevated as a result. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

We've established that Impact Coatings maintains its high P/S on the strength of its forecasted revenue growth being higher than the the rest of the Machinery industry, as expected. It appears that shareholders are confident in the company's future revenues, which is propping up the P/S. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
