Epiroc (STO:EPI A) Will Pay A Larger Dividend Than Last Year At SEK1.70
Epiroc AB (publ) (STO:EPI A) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 27th of October to SEK1.70. Even though the dividend went up, the yield is still quite low at only 1.7%.

Epiroc's Earnings Easily Cover The Distributions
The dividend yield is a little bit low, but sustainability of the payments is also an important part of evaluating an income stock. The last dividend was quite comfortably covered by Epiroc's earnings, but it was a bit tighter on the cash flow front. The business is earning enough to make the dividend feasible, but the cash payout ratio of 92% indicates it is more focused on returning cash to shareholders than growing the business.
Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 27.8% over the next year. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 41%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.
Epiroc Is Still Building Its Track Record
The dividend has been pretty stable looking back, but the company hasn't been paying one for very long. This makes it tough to judge how it would fare through a full economic cycle. The annual payment during the last 4 years was SEK2.10 in 2019, and the most recent fiscal year payment was SEK3.40. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 13% over that duration. We're not overly excited about the relatively short history of dividend payments, however the dividend is growing at a nice rate and we might take a closer look.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
Some investors will be chomping at the bit to buy some of the company's stock based on its dividend history. It's encouraging to see that Epiroc has been growing its earnings per share at 15% a year over the past five years. Shareholders are getting plenty of the earnings returned to them, which combined with strong growth makes this quite appealing.
Our Thoughts On Epiroc's Dividend
Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. While Epiroc is earning enough to cover the dividend, we are generally unimpressed with its future prospects. We would be a touch cautious of relying on this stock primarily for the dividend income.
Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company.
