ForFarmers N.V.'s (AMS:FFARM) Share Price Boosted 25% But Its Business Prospects Need A Lift Too
The ForFarmers N.V. (AMS:FFARM) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 25%. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 72%.
Although its price has surged higher, ForFarmers' price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.1x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the Food industry in the Netherlands, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 0.7x and even P/S above 3x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

What Does ForFarmers' P/S Mean For Shareholders?
ForFarmers has been struggling lately as its revenue has declined faster than most other companies. It seems that many are expecting the dismal revenue performance to persist, which has repressed the P/S. If you still like the company, you'd want its revenue trajectory to turn around before making any decisions. Or at the very least, you'd be hoping the revenue slide doesn't get any worse if your plan is to pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the industry for P/S ratios like ForFarmers' to be considered reasonable.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 7.7% decrease to the company's top line. At least revenue has managed not to go completely backwards from three years ago in aggregate, thanks to the earlier period of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say that revenue growth has been inconsistent recently for the company.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the one analyst covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 3.5% per annum over the next three years. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 54% each year growth forecast for the broader industry.
With this information, we can see why ForFarmers is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. It seems most investors are expecting to see limited future growth and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.
What Does ForFarmers' P/S Mean For Investors?
ForFarmers' stock price has surged recently, but its but its P/S still remains modest. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
As expected, our analysis of ForFarmers' analyst forecasts confirms that the company's underwhelming revenue outlook is a major contributor to its low P/S. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. The company will need a change of fortune to justify the P/S rising higher in the future.
