The total return for IJM Corporation Berhad (KLSE:IJM) investors has risen faster than earnings growth over the last five years
It hasn't been the best quarter for IJM Corporation Berhad (KLSE:IJM) shareholders, since the share price has fallen 16% in that time. Looking further back, the stock has generated good profits over five years. Its return of 71% has certainly bested the market return!
Although IJM Corporation Berhad has shed RM351m from its market cap this week, let's take a look at its longer term fundamental trends and see if they've driven returns.
To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
Over half a decade, IJM Corporation Berhad managed to grow its earnings per share at 24% a year. This EPS growth is higher than the 11% average annual increase in the share price. So one could conclude that the broader market has become more cautious towards the stock.
The graphic below depicts how EPS has changed over time (unveil the exact values by clicking on the image).
It is of course excellent to see how IJM Corporation Berhad has grown profits over the years, but the future is more important for shareholders. If you are thinking of buying or selling IJM Corporation Berhad stock, you should check out this FREE detailed report on its balance sheet.
What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. In the case of IJM Corporation Berhad, it has a TSR of 125% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
Investors in IJM Corporation Berhad had a tough year, with a total loss of 15% (including dividends), against a market gain of about 4.2%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 18%, each year, over five years. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Druckenmiller says cheap money's days are numbered. Boring, self-funding companies could be the opportunity.

Leverage on its own is close to useless as a screen right now, because so much corporate debt was termed out at 2 to 3% and has not repriced. A business at three times leverage with nothing due until 2031 is in a completely different position from the same ratio rolling next year. Screen on weighted average maturity and the schedule behind it.
In my view, Insurance companies are best positioned for this.
