What KINX, Inc.'s (KOSDAQ:093320) 26% Share Price Gain Is Not Telling You
KINX, Inc. (KOSDAQ:093320) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 26% gain in the last month alone. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 80% in the last year.
Following the firm bounce in price, KINX's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 34.1x might make it look like a strong sell right now compared to the market in Korea, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 13x and even P/E's below 7x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly elevated P/E.
KINX hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining earnings compare poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth on average. One possibility is that the P/E is high because investors think this poor earnings performance will turn the corner. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

How Is KINX's Growth Trending?
In order to justify its P/E ratio, KINX would need to produce outstanding growth well in excess of the market.
If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 9.3%. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk EPS by 33% in aggregate. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of earnings growth.
Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 41% as estimated by the two analysts watching the company. That's shaping up to be similar to the 38% growth forecast for the broader market.
With this information, we find it interesting that KINX is trading at a high P/E compared to the market. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly average growth expectations and are willing to pay up for exposure to the stock. These shareholders may be setting themselves up for disappointment if the P/E falls to levels more in line with the growth outlook.
The Bottom Line On KINX's P/E
KINX's P/E is flying high just like its stock has during the last month. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.
We've established that KINX currently trades on a higher than expected P/E since its forecast growth is only in line with the wider market. When we see an average earnings outlook with market-like growth, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, sending the high P/E lower. Unless these conditions improve, it's challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
