Revenues Not Telling The Story For Xi S&D Inc. (KRX:317400) After Shares Rise 25%
Xi S&D Inc. (KRX:317400) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 25% after a shaky period beforehand. Taking a wider view, although not as strong as the last month, the full year gain of 17% is also fairly reasonable.
Even after such a large jump in price, there still wouldn't be many who think Xi S&D's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.1x is worth a mention when the median P/S in Korea's Real Estate industry is similar at about 0.2x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/S ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

What Does Xi S&D's Recent Performance Look Like?
As an illustration, revenue has deteriorated at Xi S&D over the last year, which is not ideal at all. Perhaps investors believe the recent revenue performance is enough to keep in line with the industry, which is keeping the P/S from dropping off. If you like the company, you'd at least be hoping this is the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's not quite in favour.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should be matching the industry for P/S ratios like Xi S&D's to be considered reasonable.
Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 15%. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk revenue by 16% in aggregate. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been undesirable for the company.
Comparing that to the industry, which is predicted to deliver 14% growth in the next 12 months, the company's downward momentum based on recent medium-term revenue results is a sobering picture.
With this in mind, we find it worrying that Xi S&D's P/S exceeds that of its industry peers. Apparently many investors in the company are way less bearish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as a continuation of recent revenue trends is likely to weigh on the share price eventually.
The Final Word
Its shares have lifted substantially and now Xi S&D's P/S is back within range of the industry median. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
The fact that Xi S&D currently trades at a P/S on par with the rest of the industry is surprising to us since its recent revenues have been in decline over the medium-term, all while the industry is set to grow. Even though it matches the industry, we're uncomfortable with the current P/S ratio, as this dismal revenue performance is unlikely to support a more positive sentiment for long. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, it will place shareholders' investments at risk and potential investors in danger of paying an unnecessary premium.
