We're Hopeful That Hanall Biopharma (KRX:009420) Will Use Its Cash Wisely
Just because a business does not make any money, does not mean that the stock will go down. For example, although software-as-a-service business Salesforce.com lost money for years while it grew recurring revenue, if you held shares since 2005, you'd have done very well indeed. Nonetheless, only a fool would ignore the risk that a loss making company burns through its cash too quickly.
Given this risk, we thought we'd take a look at whether Hanall Biopharma (KRX:009420) shareholders should be worried about its cash burn. For the purposes of this article, cash burn is the annual rate at which an unprofitable company spends cash to fund its growth; its negative free cash flow. Let's start with an examination of the business' cash, relative to its cash burn.
Does Hanall Biopharma Have A Long Cash Runway?
A cash runway is defined as the length of time it would take a company to run out of money if it kept spending at its current rate of cash burn. When Hanall Biopharma last reported its March 2025 balance sheet in May 2025, it had zero debt and cash worth ₩14b. Looking at the last year, the company burnt through ₩13b. That means it had a cash runway of around 12 months as of March 2025. While that cash runway isn't too concerning, sensible holders would be peering into the distance, and considering what happens if the company runs out of cash. You can see how its cash balance has changed over time in the image below.

Is Hanall Biopharma's Revenue Growing?
We're hesitant to extrapolate on the recent trend to assess its cash burn, because Hanall Biopharma actually had positive free cash flow last year, so operating revenue growth is probably our best bet to measure, right now. In fact, operating revenue has stayed pretty steady over the last twelve months. While the past is always worth studying, it is the future that matters most of all. For that reason, it makes a lot of sense to take a look at our analyst forecasts for the company.
Can Hanall Biopharma Raise More Cash Easily?
While Hanall Biopharma is showing solid revenue growth, it's still worth considering how easily it could raise more cash, even just to fuel faster growth. Issuing new shares, or taking on debt, are the most common ways for a listed company to raise more money for its business. Many companies end up issuing new shares to fund future growth. By looking at a company's cash burn relative to its market capitalisation, we gain insight on how much shareholders would be diluted if the company needed to raise enough cash to cover another year's cash burn.
Since it has a market capitalisation of ₩1.4t, Hanall Biopharma's ₩13b in cash burn equates to about 1.0% of its market value. So it could almost certainly just borrow a little to fund another year's growth, or else easily raise the cash by issuing a few shares.
Is Hanall Biopharma's Cash Burn A Worry?
The good news is that in our view Hanall Biopharma's cash burn situation gives shareholders real reason for optimism. Not only was its revenue growth quite good, but its cash burn relative to its market cap was a real positive. While we're the kind of investors who are always a bit concerned about the risks involved with cash burning companies, the metrics we have discussed in this article leave us relatively comfortable about Hanall Biopharma's situation. We think it's very important to consider the cash burn for loss making companies, but other considerations such as the amount the CEO is paid can also enhance your understanding of the business.
