A Closer Look At PlayD's Earnings
Many investors haven't heard of the accrual ratio from cashflow, but it is actually a useful measure of how well a company's profit is backed up by free cash flow (FCF) during a given period. In plain english, this ratio subtracts FCF from net profit, and divides that number by the company's average operating assets over that period. The ratio shows us how much a company's profit exceeds its FCF.
Therefore, it's actually considered a good thing when a company has a negative accrual ratio, but a bad thing if its accrual ratio is positive. While it's not a problem to have a positive accrual ratio, indicating a certain level of non-cash profits, a high accrual ratio is arguably a bad thing, because it indicates paper profits are not matched by cash flow. Notably, there is some academic evidence that suggests that a high accrual ratio is a bad sign for near-term profits, generally speaking.
PlayD has an accrual ratio of -0.31 for the year to December 2024. That implies it has very good cash conversion, and that its earnings in the last year actually significantly understate its free cash flow. Indeed, in the last twelve months it reported free cash flow of ₩15b, well over the ₩4.30b it reported in profit. PlayD's free cash flow improved over the last year, which is generally good to see.

Our Take On PlayD's Profit Performance
Happily for shareholders, PlayD produced plenty of free cash flow to back up its statutory profit numbers. Because of this, we think PlayD's underlying earnings potential is as good as, or possibly even better, than the statutory profit makes it seem! And the EPS is up 45% annually, over the last three years. The goal of this article has been to assess how well we can rely on the statutory earnings to reflect the company's potential, but there is plenty more to consider. Keep in mind, when it comes to analysing a stock it's worth noting the risks involved. At Simply Wall St, we found 1 warning sign for PlayD and we think they deserve your attention.
