Market Might Still Lack Some Conviction On THN Corporation (KRX:019180) Even After 27% Share Price Boost

Despite an already strong run, THN Corporation (KRX:019180) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 27% in the last thirty days. The annual gain comes to 148% following the latest surge, making investors sit up and take notice.

Although its price has surged higher, THN's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 2.7x might still make it look like a strong buy right now compared to the market in Korea, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 14x and even P/E's above 30x are quite common. However, the P/E might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

THN certainly has been doing a great job lately as it's been growing earnings at a really rapid pace. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/E. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Does Growth Match The Low P/E?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far underperform the market for P/E ratios like THN's to be considered reasonable.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 78% last year. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 133% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably welcomed those medium-term rates of earnings growth.

Weighing that recent medium-term earnings trajectory against the broader market's one-year forecast for expansion of 36% shows it's about the same on an annualised basis.

With this information, we find it odd that THN is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Apparently some shareholders are more bearish than recent times would indicate and have been accepting lower selling prices.

What We Can Learn From THN's P/E?

Even after such a strong price move, THN's P/E still trails the rest of the market significantly. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

We've established that THN currently trades on a lower than expected P/E since its recent three-year growth is in line with the wider market forecast. When we see average earnings with market-like growth, we assume potential risks are what might be placing pressure on the P/E ratio. It appears some are indeed anticipating earnings instability, because the persistence of these recent medium-term conditions should normally provide more support to the share price.

There are also other vital risk factors to consider and we've discovered 2 warning signs for THN (1 is potentially serious!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
