The total return for AIT (TSE:9381) investors has risen faster than earnings growth over the last five years
AIT Corporation (TSE:9381) shareholders might be concerned after seeing the share price drop 15% in the last quarter. On the other hand the returns over the last half decade have not been bad. It's good to see the share price is up 91% in that time, better than its market return of 87%.
Although AIT has shed JP¥5.5b from its market cap this week, let's take a look at its longer term fundamental trends and see if they've driven returns.
While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
During five years of share price growth, AIT achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 15% per year. This EPS growth is reasonably close to the 14% average annual increase in the share price. This indicates that investor sentiment towards the company has not changed a great deal. Indeed, it would appear the share price is reacting to the EPS.
You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).

What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. In the case of AIT, it has a TSR of 139% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.
A Different Perspective
We regret to report that AIT shareholders are down 13% for the year (even including dividends). Unfortunately, that's worse than the broader market decline of 5.9%. However, it could simply be that the share price has been impacted by broader market jitters. It might be worth keeping an eye on the fundamentals, in case there's a good opportunity. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 19% per year over half a decade. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand AIT better, we need to consider many other factors. Take risks, for example - AIT has 1 warning sign we think you should be aware of.
