Are Robust Financials Driving The Recent Rally In Mitsubishi Logistics Corporation's (TSE:9301) Stock?
Mitsubishi Logistics (TSE:9301) has had a great run on the share market with its stock up by a significant 17% over the last month. Since the market usually pay for a company’s long-term fundamentals, we decided to study the company’s key performance indicators to see if they could be influencing the market. Specifically, we decided to study Mitsubishi Logistics' ROE in this article.
Return on equity or ROE is an important factor to be considered by a shareholder because it tells them how effectively their capital is being reinvested. In short, ROE shows the profit each dollar generates with respect to its shareholder investments.
How Is ROE Calculated?
ROE can be calculated by using the formula:
Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity
So, based on the above formula, the ROE for Mitsubishi Logistics is:
8.5% = JP¥32b ÷ JP¥379b (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2025).
The 'return' is the profit over the last twelve months. Another way to think of that is that for every ¥1 worth of equity, the company was able to earn ¥0.08 in profit.

What Has ROE Got To Do With Earnings Growth?
Thus far, we have learned that ROE measures how efficiently a company is generating its profits. Depending on how much of these profits the company reinvests or "retains", and how effectively it does so, we are then able to assess a company’s earnings growth potential. Assuming all else is equal, companies that have both a higher return on equity and higher profit retention are usually the ones that have a higher growth rate when compared to companies that don't have the same features.
Mitsubishi Logistics' Earnings Growth And 8.5% ROE
To start with, Mitsubishi Logistics' ROE looks acceptable. Further, the company's ROE compares quite favorably to the industry average of 6.5%. This certainly adds some context to Mitsubishi Logistics' decent 5.6% net income growth seen over the past five years.
As a next step, we compared Mitsubishi Logistics' net income growth with the industry and were disappointed to see that the company's growth is lower than the industry average growth of 8.9% in the same period.
Earnings growth is a huge factor in stock valuation. It’s important for an investor to know whether the market has priced in the company's expected earnings growth (or decline). Doing so will help them establish if the stock's future looks promising or ominous. Is Mitsubishi Logistics Efficiently Re-investing Its Profits?
With a three-year median payout ratio of 29% (implying that the company retains 71% of its profits), it seems that Mitsubishi Logistics is reinvesting efficiently in a way that it sees respectable amount growth in its earnings and pays a dividend that's well covered.
Moreover, Mitsubishi Logistics is determined to keep sharing its profits with shareholders which we infer from its long history of paying a dividend for at least ten years.
Summary
Overall, we are quite pleased with Mitsubishi Logistics' performance. Specifically, we like that the company is reinvesting a huge chunk of its profits at a high rate of return. This of course has caused the company to see a good amount of growth in its earnings. With that said, on studying the latest analyst forecasts, we found that while the company has seen growth in its past earnings, analysts expect its future earnings to shrink.
