The board of Komeri Co.,Ltd. (TSE:8218) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend by 3.7% on the 2nd of December to ¥28.00, up from last year's comparable payment of ¥27.00. This makes the dividend yield 1.8%, which is above the industry average.

KomeriLtd's Future Dividend Projections Appear Well Covered By Earnings

If the payments aren't sustainable, a high yield for a few years won't matter that much. However, prior to this announcement, KomeriLtd's dividend was comfortably covered by both cash flow and earnings. As a result, a large proportion of what it earned was being reinvested back into the business.

Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 5.3% over the next year. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 19% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.

KomeriLtd Has A Solid Track Record

Even over a long history of paying dividends, the company's distributions have been remarkably stable. The annual payment during the last 10 years was ¥36.00 in 2015, and the most recent fiscal year payment was ¥54.00. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 4.1% over that duration. Dividends have grown relatively slowly, which is not great, but some investors may value the relative consistency of the dividend.

The Dividend's Growth Prospects Are Limited

Investors who have held shares in the company for the past few years will be happy with the dividend income they have received. However, KomeriLtd has only grown its earnings per share at 4.1% per annum over the past five years. If KomeriLtd is struggling to find viable investments, it always has the option to increase its payout ratio to pay more to shareholders.

We Really Like KomeriLtd's Dividend

Overall, a dividend increase is always good, and we think that KomeriLtd is a strong income stock thanks to its track record and growing earnings. Earnings are easily covering distributions, and the company is generating plenty of cash. All of these factors considered, we think this has solid potential as a dividend stock.

It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company. Earnings growth generally bodes well for the future value of company dividend payments.
