The board of Robot Home, Inc. (TSE:1435) has announced that it will pay a dividend on the 30th of March, with investors receiving ¥1.00 per share. Including this payment, the dividend yield on the stock will be 1.0%, which is a modest boost for shareholders' returns.
Robot Home's Projected Earnings Seem Likely To Cover Future Distributions
It would be nice for the yield to be higher, but we should also check if higher levels of dividend payment would be sustainable. Prior to this announcement, Robot Home's earnings easily covered the dividend, but free cash flows were negative. We think that cash flows should take priority over earnings, so this is definitely a worry for the dividend going forward.
If the trend of the last few years continues, EPS will grow by 57.5% over the next 12 months. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 16% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.

Robot Home's Dividend Has Lacked Consistency
Even in its relatively short history, the company has reduced the dividend at least once. If the company cuts once, it definitely isn't argument against the possibility of it cutting in the future. Since 2016, the dividend has gone from ¥2.40 total annually to ¥2.00. The dividend has shrunk at around 2.0% a year during that period. A company that decreases its dividend over time generally isn't what we are looking for.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
Given that the dividend has been cut in the past, we need to check if earnings are growing and if that might lead to stronger dividends in the future. Robot Home has impressed us by growing EPS at 58% per year over the past five years. Earnings per share is growing at a solid clip, and the payout ratio is low which we think is an ideal combination in a dividend stock as the company can quite easily raise the dividend in the future.
Our Thoughts On Robot Home's Dividend
Overall, we don't think this company makes a great dividend stock, even though the dividend wasn't cut this year. While Robot Home is earning enough to cover the payments, the cash flows are lacking. We would probably look elsewhere for an income investment.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company.
