MS&AD Insurance Group Holdings, Inc. (TSE:8725) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 4th of December to ¥77.50. This will take the dividend yield to an attractive 4.4%, providing a nice boost to shareholder returns.

MS&AD Insurance Group Holdings' Payment Could Potentially Have Solid Earnings Coverage

If the payments aren't sustainable, a high yield for a few years won't matter that much. However, prior to this announcement, MS&AD Insurance Group Holdings' dividend was comfortably covered by both cash flow and earnings. As a result, a large proportion of what it earned was being reinvested back into the business.

The next year is set to see EPS grow by 1.1%. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 36%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.

MS&AD Insurance Group Holdings Has A Solid Track Record

The company has an extended history of paying stable dividends. The annual payment during the last 10 years was ¥19.33 in 2015, and the most recent fiscal year payment was ¥155.00. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 23% a year over that time. So, dividends have been growing pretty quickly, and even more impressively, they haven't experienced any notable falls during this period.

The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow

Investors who have held shares in the company for the past few years will be happy with the dividend income they have received. MS&AD Insurance Group Holdings has impressed us by growing EPS at 41% per year over the past five years. Earnings per share is growing at a solid clip, and the payout ratio is low which we think is an ideal combination in a dividend stock as the company can quite easily raise the dividend in the future.

MS&AD Insurance Group Holdings Looks Like A Great Dividend Stock

In summary, it is always positive to see the dividend being increased, and we are particularly pleased with its overall sustainability. Earnings are easily covering distributions, and the company is generating plenty of cash. Taking this all into consideration, this looks like it could be a good dividend opportunity.
