The board of The Japan Wool Textile Co., Ltd. (TSE:3201) has announced that it will pay a dividend of ¥17.00 per share on the 19th of August. This will take the dividend yield to an attractive 2.9%, providing a nice boost to shareholder returns.

Japan Wool Textile's Payment Could Potentially Have Solid Earnings Coverage

Impressive dividend yields are good, but this doesn't matter much if the payments can't be sustained. Before making this announcement, Japan Wool Textile was easily earning enough to cover the dividend. This means that most of what the business earns is being used to help it grow.

Over the next year, EPS could expand by 6.6% if recent trends continue. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 32% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.

Japan Wool Textile Has A Solid Track Record

The company has an extended history of paying stable dividends. Since 2015, the dividend has gone from ¥18.00 total annually to ¥42.00. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 8.8% per annum over that time. The growth of the dividend has been pretty reliable, so we think this can offer investors some nice additional income in their portfolio.

The Dividend Has Growth Potential

Some investors will be chomping at the bit to buy some of the company's stock based on its dividend history. It's encouraging to see that Japan Wool Textile has been growing its earnings per share at 6.6% a year over the past five years. Growth in EPS bodes well for the dividend, as does the low payout ratio that the company is currently reporting.

We Really Like Japan Wool Textile's Dividend

In summary, it is always positive to see the dividend being increased, and we are particularly pleased with its overall sustainability. Distributions are quite easily covered by earnings, which are also being converted to cash flows. All in all, this checks a lot of the boxes we look for when choosing an income stock.

Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company. Are management backing themselves to deliver performance?
