Is Mitsubishi Corporation's (TSE:8058) Latest Stock Performance A Reflection Of Its Financial Health?
Most readers would already be aware that Mitsubishi's (TSE:8058) stock increased significantly by 20% over the past three months. Since the market usually pay for a company’s long-term fundamentals, we decided to study the company’s key performance indicators to see if they could be influencing the market. Particularly, we will be paying attention to Mitsubishi's ROE today.
ROE or return on equity is a useful tool to assess how effectively a company can generate returns on the investment it received from its shareholders. In other words, it is a profitability ratio which measures the rate of return on the capital provided by the company's shareholders.
How Is ROE Calculated?
Return on equity can be calculated by using the formula:
Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity
So, based on the above formula, the ROE for Mitsubishi is:
11% = JP¥1.1t ÷ JP¥10t (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2025).
The 'return' refers to a company's earnings over the last year. So, this means that for every ¥1 of its shareholder's investments, the company generates a profit of ¥0.11.

Why Is ROE Important For Earnings Growth?
We have already established that ROE serves as an efficient profit-generating gauge for a company's future earnings. Based on how much of its profits the company chooses to reinvest or "retain", we are then able to evaluate a company's future ability to generate profits. Assuming everything else remains unchanged, the higher the ROE and profit retention, the higher the growth rate of a company compared to companies that don't necessarily bear these characteristics.
Mitsubishi's Earnings Growth And 11% ROE
To begin with, Mitsubishi seems to have a respectable ROE. Further, the company's ROE compares quite favorably to the industry average of 7.3%. This certainly adds some context to Mitsubishi's exceptional 20% net income growth seen over the past five years. We believe that there might also be other aspects that are positively influencing the company's earnings growth. For example, it is possible that the company's management has made some good strategic decisions, or that the company has a low payout ratio.
Next, on comparing with the industry net income growth, we found that Mitsubishi's growth is quite high when compared to the industry average growth of 12% in the same period, which is great to see.
The basis for attaching value to a company is, to a great extent, tied to its earnings growth. It’s important for an investor to know whether the market has priced in the company's expected earnings growth (or decline). Doing so will help them establish if the stock's future looks promising or ominous. One good indicator of expected earnings growth is the P/E ratio which determines the price the market is willing to pay for a stock based on its earnings prospects. So, you may want to check if Mitsubishi is trading on a high P/E or a low P/E, relative to its industry.
Is Mitsubishi Making Efficient Use Of Its Profits?
Mitsubishi has a three-year median payout ratio of 30% (where it is retaining 70% of its income) which is not too low or not too high. This suggests that its dividend is well covered, and given the high growth we discussed above, it looks like Mitsubishi is reinvesting its earnings efficiently.
Besides, Mitsubishi has been paying dividends for at least ten years or more. This shows that the company is committed to sharing profits with its shareholders.
Summary
In total, we are pretty happy with Mitsubishi's performance. In particular, it's great to see that the company is investing heavily into its business and along with a high rate of return, that has resulted in a sizeable growth in its earnings. With that said, on studying the latest analyst forecasts, we found that while the company has seen growth in its past earnings, analysts expect its future earnings to shrink.
