Daikin IndustriesLtd (TSE:6367) shareholders have endured a 19% loss from investing in the stock three years ago
For many investors, the main point of stock picking is to generate higher returns than the overall market. But in any portfolio, there are likely to be some stocks that fall short of that benchmark. We regret to report that long term Daikin Industries,Ltd. (TSE:6367) shareholders have had that experience, with the share price dropping 22% in three years, versus a market return of about 58%.
It's worthwhile assessing if the company's economics have been moving in lockstep with these underwhelming shareholder returns, or if there is some disparity between the two. So let's do just that.
In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
Although the share price is down over three years, Daikin IndustriesLtd actually managed to grow EPS by 6.7% per year in that time. This is quite a puzzle, and suggests there might be something temporarily buoying the share price. Or else the company was over-hyped in the past, and so its growth has disappointed.
Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.
The modest 1.8% dividend yield is unlikely to be guiding the market view of the stock. Revenue is actually up 13% over the three years, so the share price drop doesn't seem to hinge on revenue, either. This analysis is just perfunctory, but it might be worth researching Daikin IndustriesLtd more closely, as sometimes stocks fall unfairly. This could present an opportunity.

What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. We note that for Daikin IndustriesLtd the TSR over the last 3 years was -19%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
Investors in Daikin IndustriesLtd had a tough year, with a total loss of 3.6% (including dividends), against a market gain of about 12%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 0.9% per year over half a decade. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. Is Daikin IndustriesLtd cheap compared to other companies? These 3 valuation measures might help you decide.
