Nikko's (TSE:6306) Dividend Will Be ¥17.00

Nikko Co., Ltd.'s (TSE:6306) investors are due to receive a payment of ¥17.00 per share on 26th of June. This means the annual payment is 4.5% of the current stock price, which is above the average for the industry.

Nikko's Projected Earnings Seem Likely To Cover Future Distributions

We like to see robust dividend yields, but that doesn't matter if the payment isn't sustainable. Before making this announcement, Nikko was paying out quite a large proportion of both earnings and cash flow, with the dividend being 396% of cash flows. This is certainly a risk factor, as reduced cash flows could force the company to pay a lower dividend.

Over the next year, EPS could expand by 1.6% if the company continues along the path it has been on recently. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, our estimates say the payout ratio could reach 80%, which is definitely on the higher side, but we wouldn't necessarily say this is unsustainable.

Nikko Has A Solid Track Record

The company has been paying a dividend for a long time, and it has been quite stable which gives us confidence in the future dividend potential. The dividend has gone from an annual total of ¥10.00 in 2015 to the most recent total annual payment of ¥34.00. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 13% a year over that time. So, dividends have been growing pretty quickly, and even more impressively, they haven't experienced any notable falls during this period.

The Dividend's Growth Prospects Are Limited

Investors could be attracted to the stock based on the quality of its payment history. Although it's important to note that Nikko's earnings per share has basically not grown from where it was five years ago, which could erode the purchasing power of the dividend over time. There are exceptions, but limited earnings growth and a high payout ratio can signal that a company has reached maturity. When the rate of return on reinvestment opportunities falls below a certain minimum level, companies often elect to pay a larger dividend instead. This is why many mature companies often have larger dividend yields.

Our Thoughts On Nikko's Dividend

In summary, while it's good to see that the dividend hasn't been cut, we are a bit cautious about Nikko's payments, as there could be some issues with sustaining them into the future. While Nikko is earning enough to cover the payments, the cash flows are lacking. This company is not in the top tier of income providing stocks.

It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company.
