There's No Escaping Advanex Inc.'s (TSE:5998) Muted Revenues Despite A 26% Share Price Rise
Advanex Inc. (TSE:5998) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 26% after a shaky period beforehand. Looking further back, the 14% rise over the last twelve months isn't too bad notwithstanding the strength over the last 30 days.
Even after such a large jump in price, given about half the companies operating in Japan's Machinery industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") above 0.7x, you may still consider Advanex as an attractive investment with its 0.1x P/S ratio. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Advanex Has Been Performing
Advanex's revenue growth of late has been pretty similar to most other companies. It might be that many expect the mediocre revenue performance to degrade, which has repressed the P/S ratio. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the industry for P/S ratios like Advanex's to be considered reasonable.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 7.0% gain to the company's revenues. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 31% overall rise in revenue, aided somewhat by its short-term performance. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the one analyst covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 2.1% over the next year. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 4.7%, which is noticeably more attractive.
In light of this, it's understandable that Advanex's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.
The Bottom Line On Advanex's P/S
Advanex's stock price has surged recently, but its but its P/S still remains modest. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
We've established that Advanex maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider industry, as expected. Shareholders' pessimism on the revenue prospects for the company seems to be the main contributor to the depressed P/S. The company will need a change of fortune to justify the P/S rising higher in the future.
