There's Been No Shortage Of Growth Recently For Onamba's (TSE:5816) Returns On Capital
Did you know there are some financial metrics that can provide clues of a potential multi-bagger? One common approach is to try and find a company with returns on capital employed (ROCE) that are increasing, in conjunction with a growing amount of capital employed. Put simply, these types of businesses are compounding machines, meaning they are continually reinvesting their earnings at ever-higher rates of return. So when we looked at Onamba (TSE:5816) and its trend of ROCE, we really liked what we saw.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Onamba:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.074 = JP¥2.2b ÷ (JP¥40b - JP¥10b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2024).
So, Onamba has an ROCE of 7.4%. In absolute terms, that's a low return but it's around the Electrical industry average of 8.8%.

What The Trend Of ROCE Can Tell Us
While in absolute terms it isn't a high ROCE, it's promising to see that it has been moving in the right direction. The numbers show that in the last five years, the returns generated on capital employed have grown considerably to 7.4%. The company is effectively making more money per dollar of capital used, and it's worth noting that the amount of capital has increased too, by 61%. This can indicate that there's plenty of opportunities to invest capital internally and at ever higher rates, a combination that's common among multi-baggers.
In Conclusion...
All in all, it's terrific to see that Onamba is reaping the rewards from prior investments and is growing its capital base. And a remarkable 271% total return over the last five years tells us that investors are expecting more good things to come in the future.
