Ichiken's (TSE:1847) Shareholders May Want To Dig Deeper Than Statutory Profit
Ichiken Co., Ltd.'s (TSE:1847) robust recent earnings didn't do much to move the stock. We think this is due to investors looking beyond the statutory profits and being concerned with what they see.
Examining Cashflow Against Ichiken's Earnings
As finance nerds would already know, the accrual ratio from cashflow is a key measure for assessing how well a company's free cash flow (FCF) matches its profit. To get the accrual ratio we first subtract FCF from profit for a period, and then divide that number by the average operating assets for the period. The ratio shows us how much a company's profit exceeds its FCF.
Therefore, it's actually considered a good thing when a company has a negative accrual ratio, but a bad thing if its accrual ratio is positive. That is not intended to imply we should worry about a positive accrual ratio, but it's worth noting where the accrual ratio is rather high. That's because some academic studies have suggested that high accruals ratios tend to lead to lower profit or less profit growth.
Ichiken has an accrual ratio of 0.25 for the year to September 2025. Unfortunately, that means its free cash flow fell significantly short of its reported profits. In fact, it had free cash flow of JP¥2.2b in the last year, which was a lot less than its statutory profit of JP¥5.22b. As it happens we don't have the data on what Ichiken produced by way of free cashflow, the year before, which is a pity.

Our Take On Ichiken's Profit Performance
Ichiken's accrual ratio for the last twelve months signifies cash conversion is less than ideal, which is a negative when it comes to our view of its earnings. Therefore, it seems possible to us that Ichiken's true underlying earnings power is actually less than its statutory profit. At the end of the day, it's essential to consider more than just the factors above, if you want to understand the company properly. If you want to do dive deeper into Ichiken, you'd also look into what risks it is currently facing. Our analysis shows 3 warning signs for Ichiken (1 shouldn't be ignored!) and we strongly recommend you look at these before investing.
