Mizuho Financial Group's Earnings Will Easily Cover The Distributions

Solid dividend yields are great, but they only really help us if the payment is sustainable.

Having distributed dividends for at least 10 years, Mizuho Financial Group has a long history of paying out a part of its earnings to shareholders. Taking data from its last earnings report, calculating for the company's payout ratio shows 40%, which means that Mizuho Financial Group would be able to pay its last dividend without pressure on the balance sheet.

Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 9.7% over the next year. If the dividend continues on this path, the future payout ratio could be 39% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.

Mizuho Financial Group Has A Solid Track Record

The company has an extended history of paying stable dividends. Since 2015, the dividend has gone from ¥70.00 total annually to ¥145.00. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 7.6% per annum over that time. The dividend has been growing very nicely for a number of years, and has given its shareholders some nice income in their portfolios.

The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow

The company's investors will be pleased to have been receiving dividend income for some time. It's encouraging to see that Mizuho Financial Group has been growing its earnings per share at 17% a year over the past five years. Growth in EPS bodes well for the dividend, as does the low payout ratio that the company is currently reporting.

We Really Like Mizuho Financial Group's Dividend

Overall, we think this could be an attractive income stock, and it is only getting better by paying a higher dividend this year. Earnings are easily covering distributions, and the company is generating plenty of cash. Taking this all into consideration, this looks like it could be a good dividend opportunity.

Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. However, there are other things to consider for investors when analysing stock performance. Companies that are growing earnings tend to be the best dividend stocks over the long term.
