The total return for Chiba Kogyo Bank (TSE:8337) investors has risen faster than earnings growth over the last five years
The Chiba Kogyo Bank, Ltd. (TSE:8337) shareholders have seen the share price descend 28% over the month. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last half decade have been spectacular. Indeed, the share price is up a whopping 327% in that time. So we don't think the recent decline in the share price means its story is a sad one. The most important thing for savvy investors to consider is whether the underlying business can justify the share price gain.
In light of the stock dropping 23% in the past week, we want to investigate the longer term story, and see if fundamentals have been the driver of the company's positive five-year return.
While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
During five years of share price growth, Chiba Kogyo Bank achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 19% per year. This EPS growth is slower than the share price growth of 34% per year, over the same period. So it's fair to assume the market has a higher opinion of the business than it did five years ago. And that's hardly shocking given the track record of growth.

What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. We note that for Chiba Kogyo Bank the TSR over the last 5 years was 351%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
We're pleased to report that Chiba Kogyo Bank shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 5.6% over one year. Of course, that includes the dividend. However, that falls short of the 35% TSR per annum it has made for shareholders, each year, over five years. Potential buyers might understandably feel they've missed the opportunity, but it's always possible business is still firing on all cylinders. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Chiba Kogyo Bank better, we need to consider many other factors.
