Are Alkemy S.p.A.'s (BIT:ALK) Fundamentals Good Enough to Warrant Buying Given The Stock's Recent Weakness?
Alkemy (BIT:ALK) has had a rough three months with its share price down 22%. But if you pay close attention, you might find that its key financial indicators look quite decent, which could mean that the stock could potentially rise in the long-term given how markets usually reward more resilient long-term fundamentals. Specifically, we decided to study Alkemy's ROE in this article.
ROE or return on equity is a useful tool to assess how effectively a company can generate returns on the investment it received from its shareholders. In other words, it is a profitability ratio which measures the rate of return on the capital provided by the company's shareholders.

How Do You Calculate Return On Equity?
The formula for ROE is:
Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity
So, based on the above formula, the ROE for Alkemy is:
6.5% = €3.1m ÷ €48m (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2024).
The 'return' is the amount earned after tax over the last twelve months. One way to conceptualize this is that for each €1 of shareholders' capital it has, the company made €0.06 in profit.
What Has ROE Got To Do With Earnings Growth?
So far, we've learned that ROE is a measure of a company's profitability. Based on how much of its profits the company chooses to reinvest or "retain", we are then able to evaluate a company's future ability to generate profits. Assuming all else is equal, companies that have both a higher return on equity and higher profit retention are usually the ones that have a higher growth rate when compared to companies that don't have the same features.
Alkemy's Earnings Growth And 6.5% ROE
When you first look at it, Alkemy's ROE doesn't look that attractive. Yet, a closer study shows that the company's ROE is similar to the industry average of 6.7%. Moreover, we are quite pleased to see that Alkemy's net income grew significantly at a rate of 27% over the last five years. Taking into consideration that the ROE is not particularly high, we reckon that there could also be other factors at play which could be influencing the company's growth. For example, it is possible that the company's management has made some good strategic decisions, or that the company has a low payout ratio.
As a next step, we compared Alkemy's net income growth with the industry and found that the company has a similar growth figure when compared with the industry average growth rate of 25% in the same period.
Earnings growth is an important metric to consider when valuing a stock. It’s important for an investor to know whether the market has priced in the company's expected earnings growth (or decline). This then helps them determine if the stock is placed for a bright or bleak future. Is ALK fairly valued? This infographic on the company's intrinsic value has everything you need to know.
Is Alkemy Making Efficient Use Of Its Profits?
Given that Alkemy doesn't pay any regular dividends to its shareholders, we infer that the company has been reinvesting all of its profits to grow its business.
Summary
On the whole, we do feel that Alkemy has some positive attributes. Even in spite of the low rate of return, the company has posted impressive earnings growth as a result of reinvesting heavily into its business. The latest industry analyst forecasts show that the company is expected to maintain its current growth rate.
