Investors Met With Slowing Returns on Capital At Ramkrishna Forgings (NSE:RKFORGE)
There are a few key trends to look for if we want to identify the next multi-bagger. One common approach is to try and find a company with returns on capital employed (ROCE) that are increasing, in conjunction with a growing amount of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. That's why when we briefly looked at Ramkrishna Forgings' (NSE:RKFORGE) ROCE trend, we were pretty happy with what we saw.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Ramkrishna Forgings:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.15 = ₹6.3b ÷ (₹60b - ₹19b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2024).
Thus, Ramkrishna Forgings has an ROCE of 15%. In absolute terms, that's a pretty normal return, and it's somewhat close to the Metals and Mining industry average of 14%.

What Does the ROCE Trend For Ramkrishna Forgings Tell Us?
The trend of ROCE doesn't stand out much, but returns on a whole are decent. The company has employed 186% more capital in the last five years, and the returns on that capital have remained stable at 15%. Since 15% is a moderate ROCE though, it's good to see a business can continue to reinvest at these decent rates of return. Stable returns in this ballpark can be unexciting, but if they can be maintained over the long run, they often provide nice rewards to shareholders.
What We Can Learn From Ramkrishna Forgings' ROCE
The main thing to remember is that Ramkrishna Forgings has proven its ability to continually reinvest at respectable rates of return. And long term investors would be thrilled with the 1,479% return they've received over the last five years. So even though the stock might be more "expensive" than it was before, we think the strong fundamentals warrant this stock for further research.
On a final note, we found 2 warning signs for Ramkrishna Forgings (1 is a bit unpleasant) you should be aware of.
