Paisalo Digital's (NSE:PAISALO) earnings growth rate lags the 10% CAGR delivered to shareholders

Simply Wall St

Paisalo Digital Limited (NSE:PAISALO) shareholders have seen the share price descend 18% over the month. But the silver lining is the stock is up over five years. In that time, it is up 62%, which isn't bad, but is below the market return of 159%. Unfortunately not all shareholders will have held it for the long term, so spare a thought for those caught in the 25% decline over the last twelve months.

Since the long term performance has been good but there's been a recent pullback of 16%, let's check if the fundamentals match the share price.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

During five years of share price growth, Paisalo Digital achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 29% per year. This EPS growth is higher than the 10% average annual increase in the share price. So it seems the market isn't so enthusiastic about the stock these days.

You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).

A Different Perspective

While the broader market gained around 3.1% in the last year, Paisalo Digital shareholders lost 25% (even including dividends). However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 10%, each year, over five years. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk.
