Goldiam International's (NSE:GOLDIAM) Profits Appear To Have Quality Issues

The recent earnings posted by Goldiam International Limited (NSE:GOLDIAM) were solid, but the stock didn't move as much as we expected. We believe that shareholders have noticed some concerning factors beyond the statutory profit numbers.

A Closer Look At Goldiam International's Earnings

In high finance, the key ratio used to measure how well a company converts reported profits into free cash flow (FCF) is the accrual ratio (from cashflow). To get the accrual ratio we first subtract FCF from profit for a period, and then divide that number by the average operating assets for the period. This ratio tells us how much of a company's profit is not backed by free cashflow.

That means a negative accrual ratio is a good thing, because it shows that the company is bringing in more free cash flow than its profit would suggest. While having an accrual ratio above zero is of little concern, we do think it's worth noting when a company has a relatively high accrual ratio. Notably, there is some academic evidence that suggests that a high accrual ratio is a bad sign for near-term profits, generally speaking.

Over the twelve months to March 2025, Goldiam International recorded an accrual ratio of 0.34. Unfortunately, that means its free cash flow was a lot less than its statutory profit, which makes us doubt the utility of profit as a guide. Over the last year it actually had negative free cash flow of ₹204m, in contrast to the aforementioned profit of ₹1.17b. It's worth noting that Goldiam International generated positive FCF of ₹1.0b a year ago, so at least they've done it in the past. The good news for shareholders is that Goldiam International's accrual ratio was much better last year, so this year's poor reading might simply be a case of a short term mismatch between profit and FCF. Shareholders should look for improved cashflow relative to profit in the current year, if that is indeed the case.

Our Take On Goldiam International's Profit Performance

As we have made quite clear, we're a bit worried that Goldiam International didn't back up the last year's profit with free cashflow. For this reason, we think that Goldiam International's statutory profits may be a bad guide to its underlying earnings power, and might give investors an overly positive impression of the company. But at least holders can take some solace from the 15% per annum growth in EPS for the last three. The goal of this article has been to assess how well we can rely on the statutory earnings to reflect the company's potential, but there is plenty more to consider.
