Here's What To Make Of Adani Enterprises' (NSE:ADANIENT) Decelerating Rates Of Return
To find a multi-bagger stock, what are the underlying trends we should look for in a business? Amongst other things, we'll want to see two things; firstly, a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an expansion in the company's amount of capital employed. Basically this means that a company has profitable initiatives that it can continue to reinvest in, which is a trait of a compounding machine. However, after briefly looking over the numbers, we don't think Adani Enterprises (NSE:ADANIENT) has the makings of a multi-bagger going forward, but let's have a look at why that may be.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. The formula for this calculation on Adani Enterprises is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.067 = ₹101b ÷ (₹2.0t - ₹474b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2025).
Therefore, Adani Enterprises has an ROCE of 6.7%. On its own that's a low return, but compared to the average of 5.2% generated by the Trade Distributors industry, it's much better.

In the above chart we have measured Adani Enterprises' prior ROCE against its prior performance, but the future is arguably more important. If you're interested, you can view the analysts predictions in our free analyst report for Adani Enterprises .
The Trend Of ROCE
In terms of Adani Enterprises' historical ROCE trend, it doesn't exactly demand attention. The company has employed 539% more capital in the last five years, and the returns on that capital have remained stable at 6.7%. This poor ROCE doesn't inspire confidence right now, and with the increase in capital employed, it's evident that the business isn't deploying the funds into high return investments.
One more thing to note, even though ROCE has remained relatively flat over the last five years, the reduction in current liabilities to 24% of total assets, is good to see from a business owner's perspective. Effectively suppliers now fund less of the business, which can lower some elements of risk.
The Bottom Line
In summary, Adani Enterprises has simply been reinvesting capital and generating the same low rate of return as before. Yet to long term shareholders the stock has gifted them an incredible 1,592% return in the last five years, so the market appears to be rosy about its future. However, unless these underlying trends turn more positive, we wouldn't get our hopes up too high.
