Dividend paying stocks like Budapesti Ingatlan Hasznosítási és Fejlesztési Nyrt. (BUSE:BIF) tend to be popular with investors, and for good reason – some research suggests a significant amount of all stock market returns come from reinvested dividends. Unfortunately, it’s common for investors to be enticed in by the seemingly attractive yield, and lose money when the company has to cut its dividend payments.
Some readers mightn’t know much about Budapesti Ingatlan Hasznosítási és Fejlesztési Nyrt’s 3.4% dividend, as it has only been paying distributions for a year or so. Some simple analysis can offer a lot of insights when buying a company for its dividend, and we’ll go through this below.
Companies (usually) pay dividends out of their earnings. If a company is paying more than it earns, the dividend might have to be cut. As a result, we should always investigate whether a company can afford its dividend, measured as a percentage of a company’s net income after tax. Dividend Growth Potential
Examining whether the dividend is affordable and stable is important. However, it’s also important to assess if earnings per share (EPS) are growing. Growing EPS can help maintain or increase the purchasing power of the dividend over the long run. Strong earnings per share (EPS) growth might encourage our interest in the company despite fluctuating dividends, which is why it’s great to see Budapesti Ingatlan Hasznosítási és Fejlesztési Nyrt has grown its earnings per share at 80% per annum over the past five years. However, always remember that very few companies can grow at double digit rates forever.

Next, earnings growth has been good, but unfortunately the company has not been paying dividends as long as we’d like. In sum, we find it hard to get excited about Budapesti Ingatlan Hasznosítási és Fejlesztési Nyrt from a dividend perspective. It’s not that we think it’s a bad business; just that there are other companies that perform better on these criteria.
