China Gas Holdings Limited (HKG:384) has announced that it will pay a dividend of HK$0.35 per share on the 9th of October. This makes the dividend yield 8.3%, which will augment investor returns quite nicely.
China Gas Holdings' Payment Could Potentially Have Solid Earnings Coverage
Impressive dividend yields are good, but this doesn't matter much if the payments can't be sustained. Prior to this announcement, China Gas Holdings' dividend made up quite a large proportion of earnings but only of free cash flows. In general, cash flows are more important than earnings, so we are comfortable that the dividend will be sustainable going forward, especially with so much cash left over for reinvestment.
Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 18.4%. If recent patterns in the dividend continues, the payout ratio in 12 months could be 78% which is a bit high but can definitely be sustainable.

China Gas Holdings Has A Solid Track Record
Even over a long history of paying dividends, the company's distributions have been remarkably stable. The annual payment during the last 10 years was HK$0.121 in 2015, and the most recent fiscal year payment was HK$0.70. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 19% per annum over that time. Rapidly growing dividends for a long time is a very valuable feature for an income stock.
The Dividend Has Limited Growth Potential
Investors could be attracted to the stock based on the quality of its payment history. Unfortunately things aren't as good as they seem. China Gas Holdings' earnings per share has shrunk at 19% a year over the past five years. Dividend payments are likely to come under some pressure unless EPS can pull out of the nosedive it is in. Over the next year, however, earnings are actually predicted to rise, but we would still be cautious until a track record of earnings growth can be built.
Our Thoughts On China Gas Holdings' Dividend
In summary, while it's good to see that the dividend hasn't been cut, we are a bit cautious about China Gas Holdings' payments, as there could be some issues with sustaining them into the future. The company is generating plenty of cash, but we still think the dividend is a bit high for comfort. We would be a touch cautious of relying on this stock primarily for the dividend income.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable.
