Don't Buy Truly International Holdings Limited (HKG:732) For Its Next Dividend Without Doing These Checks

Regular readers will know that we love our dividends at Simply Wall St, which is why it's exciting to see Truly International Holdings Limited (HKG:732) is about to trade ex-dividend in the next 4 days. The ex-dividend date generally occurs two days before the record date, which is the day on which shareholders need to be on the company's books in order to receive a dividend. The ex-dividend date is important as the process of settlement involves at least two full business days. So if you miss that date, you would not show up on the company's books on the record date. Meaning, you will need to purchase Truly International Holdings' shares before the 14th of May to receive the dividend, which will be paid on the 1st of June.

The company's next dividend payment will be HK$0.05 per share, and in the last 12 months, the company paid a total of HK$0.10 per share. Based on the last year's worth of payments, Truly International Holdings stock has a trailing yield of around 9.7% on the current share price of HK$1.03. If you buy this business for its dividend, you should have an idea of whether Truly International Holdings's dividend is reliable and sustainable. We need to see whether the dividend is covered by earnings and if it's growing.

Dividends are typically paid from company earnings. If a company pays more in dividends than it earned in profit, then the dividend could be unsustainable. Truly International Holdings distributed an unsustainably high 112% of its profit as dividends to shareholders last year. Without extenuating circumstances, we'd consider the dividend at risk of a cut. That said, even highly profitable companies sometimes might not generate enough cash to pay the dividend, which is why we should always check if the dividend is covered by cash flow. What's good is that dividends were well covered by free cash flow, with the company paying out 5.7% of its cash flow last year.

It's good to see that while Truly International Holdings's dividends were not covered by profits, at least they are affordable from a cash perspective. Still, if the company repeatedly paid a dividend greater than its profits, we'd be concerned. Very few companies are able to sustainably pay dividends larger than their reported earnings.

Have Earnings And Dividends Been Growing?

Businesses with shrinking earnings are tricky from a dividend perspective. If business enters a downturn and the dividend is cut, the company could see its value fall precipitously. Truly International Holdings's earnings per share have fallen at approximately 9.5% a year over the previous five years. When earnings per share fall, the maximum amount of dividends that can be paid also falls.

Many investors will assess a company's dividend performance by evaluating how much the dividend payments have changed over time. Truly International Holdings's dividend payments are effectively flat on where they were 10 years ago. If a company's dividend stays flat while earnings are in decline, this is typically a sign that it is paying out a larger percentage of its earnings. This can become unsustainable if earnings fall far enough.

The Bottom Line

Should investors buy Truly International Holdings for the upcoming dividend? It's never great to see earnings per share declining, especially when a company is paying out 112% of its profit as dividends, which we feel is uncomfortably high. However, the cash payout ratio was much lower - good news from a dividend perspective - which makes us wonder why there is such a mis-match between income and cashflow. Overall it doesn't look like the most suitable dividend stock for a long-term buy and hold investor.

With that being said, if you're still considering Truly International Holdings as an investment, you'll find it beneficial to know what risks this stock is facing. For example, Truly International Holdings has 4 warning signs (and 2 which don't sit too well with us) we think you should know about.
