Daohe Global Group Limited's (HKG:915) 25% Cheaper Price Remains In Tune With Earnings
Daohe Global Group Limited (HKG:915) shares have retraced a considerable 25% in the last month, reversing a fair amount of their solid recent performance. Longer-term, the stock has been solid despite a difficult 30 days, gaining 22% in the last year.
Although its price has dipped substantially, given close to half the companies in Hong Kong have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") below 10x, you may still consider Daohe Global Group as a stock to avoid entirely with its 17.7x P/E ratio. However, the P/E might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
Daohe Global Group certainly has been doing a great job lately as it's been growing earnings at a really rapid pace. The P/E is probably high because investors think this strong earnings growth will be enough to outperform the broader market in the near future. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

How Is Daohe Global Group's Growth Trending?
There's an inherent assumption that a company should far outperform the market for P/E ratios like Daohe Global Group's to be considered reasonable.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 49% gain to the company's bottom line. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 97% overall rise in EPS, aided by its short-term performance. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.
This is in contrast to the rest of the market, which is expected to grow by 21% over the next year, materially lower than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.
In light of this, it's understandable that Daohe Global Group's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. Presumably shareholders aren't keen to offload something they believe will continue to outmanoeuvre the bourse.
What We Can Learn From Daohe Global Group's P/E?
Daohe Global Group's shares may have retreated, but its P/E is still flying high. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
We've established that Daohe Global Group maintains its high P/E on the strength of its recent three-year growth being higher than the wider market forecast, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in earnings isn't great enough to justify a lower P/E ratio. Unless the recent medium-term conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
