China Hanking Holdings' (HKG:3788) one-year earnings growth trails the impressive shareholder returns
The simplest way to invest in stocks is to buy exchange traded funds. But one can do better than that by picking better than average stocks (as part of a diversified portfolio). For example, the China Hanking Holdings Limited (HKG:3788) share price is up 98% in the last 1 year, clearly besting the market return of around 21% (not including dividends). So that should have shareholders smiling. Also impressive, the stock is up 53% over three years, making long term shareholders happy, too.
Since it's been a strong week for China Hanking Holdings shareholders, let's have a look at trend of the longer term fundamentals.
There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
China Hanking Holdings was able to grow EPS by 20% in the last twelve months. This EPS growth is significantly lower than the 98% increase in the share price. This indicates that the market is now more optimistic about the stock.
You can see below how EPS has changed over time (discover the exact values by clicking on the image).
We like that insiders have been buying shares in the last twelve months. Having said that, most people consider earnings and revenue growth trends to be a more meaningful guide to the business. What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. In the case of China Hanking Holdings, it has a TSR of 106% for the last 1 year. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
We're pleased to report that China Hanking Holdings shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 106% over one year. And that does include the dividend. That's better than the annualised return of 11% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand China Hanking Holdings better, we need to consider many other factors.
