The Returns On Capital At Yankuang Energy Group (HKG:1171) Don't Inspire Confidence

If we want to find a potential multi-bagger, often there are underlying trends that can provide clues. In a perfect world, we'd like to see a company investing more capital into its business and ideally the returns earned from that capital are also increasing. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. In light of that, when we looked at Yankuang Energy Group (HKG:1171) and its ROCE trend, we weren't exactly thrilled.

Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?

If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. To calculate this metric for Yankuang Energy Group, this is the formula:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.066 = CN¥18b ÷ (CN¥432b - CN¥154b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2025).

So, Yankuang Energy Group has an ROCE of 6.6%. On its own that's a low return, but compared to the average of 5.3% generated by the Oil and Gas industry, it's much better.

How Are Returns Trending?

In terms of Yankuang Energy Group's historical ROCE movements, the trend isn't fantastic. Around five years ago the returns on capital were 11%, but since then they've fallen to 6.6%. However it looks like Yankuang Energy Group might be reinvesting for long term growth because while capital employed has increased, the company's sales haven't changed much in the last 12 months. It may take some time before the company starts to see any change in earnings from these investments.

The Bottom Line

To conclude, we've found that Yankuang Energy Group is reinvesting in the business, but returns have been falling. Yet to long term shareholders the stock has gifted them an incredible 507% return in the last five years, so the market appears to be rosy about its future. However, unless these underlying trends turn more positive, we wouldn't get our hopes up too high.
