There's Been No Shortage Of Growth Recently For Ferretti's (HKG:9638) Returns On Capital
If we want to find a stock that could multiply over the long term, what are the underlying trends we should look for? Typically, we'll want to notice a trend of growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and alongside that, an expanding base of capital employed. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. Speaking of which, we noticed some great changes in Ferretti's (HKG:9638) returns on capital, so let's have a look.
Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. The formula for this calculation on Ferretti is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.12 = €114m ÷ (€1.7b - €702m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2024).
Thus, Ferretti has an ROCE of 12%. On its own, that's a standard return, however it's much better than the 2.9% generated by the Leisure industry.

What The Trend Of ROCE Can Tell Us
Ferretti is displaying some positive trends. Over the last five years, returns on capital employed have risen substantially to 12%. Basically the business is earning more per dollar of capital invested and in addition to that, 90% more capital is being employed now too. So we're very much inspired by what we're seeing at Ferretti thanks to its ability to profitably reinvest capital.
On a side note, Ferretti's current liabilities are still rather high at 42% of total assets. This effectively means that suppliers (or short-term creditors) are funding a large portion of the business, so just be aware that this can introduce some elements of risk. Ideally we'd like to see this reduce as that would mean fewer obligations bearing risks.

The Bottom Line On Ferretti's ROCE
In summary, it's great to see that Ferretti can compound returns by consistently reinvesting capital at increasing rates of return, because these are some of the key ingredients of those highly sought after multi-baggers. Since the stock has returned a solid 33% to shareholders over the last three years, it's fair to say investors are beginning to recognize these changes. Therefore, we think it would be worth your time to check if these trends are going to continue.
