Just Four Days Till Suga International Holdings Limited (HKG:912) Will Be Trading Ex-Dividend

It looks like Suga International Holdings Limited (HKG:912) is about to go ex-dividend in the next four days. Typically, the ex-dividend date is two business days before the record date, which is the date on which a company determines the shareholders eligible to receive a dividend. The ex-dividend date is of consequence because whenever a stock is bought or sold, the trade can take two business days or more to settle. Accordingly, Suga International Holdings investors that purchase the stock on or after the 10th of December will not receive the dividend, which will be paid on the 23rd of December.

The company's next dividend payment will be HK$0.04 per share, on the back of last year when the company paid a total of HK$0.08 to shareholders. Last year's total dividend payments show that Suga International Holdings has a trailing yield of 6.8% on the current share price of HK$1.17. Dividends are a major contributor to investment returns for long term holders, but only if the dividend continues to be paid. So we need to investigate whether Suga International Holdings can afford its dividend, and if the dividend could grow.

If a company pays out more in dividends than it earned, then the dividend might become unsustainable - hardly an ideal situation. Suga International Holdings paid out 70% of its earnings to investors last year, a normal payout level for most businesses. A useful secondary check can be to evaluate whether Suga International Holdings generated enough free cash flow to afford its dividend. It paid out 13% of its free cash flow as dividends last year, which is conservatively low.

It's positive to see that Suga International Holdings's dividend is covered by both profits and cash flow, since this is generally a sign that the dividend is sustainable, and a lower payout ratio usually suggests a greater margin of safety before the dividend gets cut.

Have Earnings And Dividends Been Growing?

Businesses with strong growth prospects usually make the best dividend payers, because it's easier to grow dividends when earnings per share are improving. Investors love dividends, so if earnings fall and the dividend is reduced, expect a stock to be sold off heavily at the same time. With that in mind, we're encouraged by the steady growth at Suga International Holdings, with earnings per share up 3.1% on average over the last five years. Earnings growth has been slim and the company is paying out more than half of its earnings. While there is some room to both increase the payout ratio and reinvest in the business, generally the higher a payout ratio goes, the lower a company's prospects for future growth.

Many investors will assess a company's dividend performance by evaluating how much the dividend payments have changed over time. Suga International Holdings has seen its dividend decline 6.1% per annum on average over the past 10 years, which is not great to see. It's unusual to see earnings per share increasing at the same time as dividends per share have been in decline. We'd hope it's because the company is reinvesting heavily in its business, but it could also suggest business is lumpy.

To Sum It Up

Is Suga International Holdings an attractive dividend stock, or better left on the shelf? While earnings per share growth has been modest, Suga International Holdings's dividend payouts are around an average level; without a sharp change in earnings we feel that the dividend is likely somewhat sustainable. Pleasingly the company paid out a conservatively low percentage of its free cash flow. Overall, it's not a bad combination, but we feel that there are likely more attractive dividend prospects out there.
