If there is any debt we look at the companies capability to repay it, and whether the level has increased over the past 5 years.

Would China Communications Construction Company Limited (HKG:1800) Be Valuable To Income Investors?

Dividend paying stocks like China Communications Construction Company Limited (HKG:1800) tend to be popular with investors, and for good reason - some research suggests a significant amount of all stock market returns come from reinvested dividends. Unfortunately, it's common for investors to be enticed in by the seemingly attractive yield, and lose money when the company has to cut its dividend payments. With a nine-year payment history and a 3.9% yield, many investors probably find China Communications Construction intriguing. It sure looks interesting on these metrics - but there's always more to the story . Before you buy any stock for its dividend however, you should always remember Warren Buffett's two rules: 1) Don't lose money, and 2) Remember rule #1. We'll run through some checks below to help with this. Explore this interactive chart for our latest analysis on China Communications Construction! SEHK:1800 Historical Dividend Yield, June 18th 2019 Payout ratios Dividends are usually paid out of company earnings. If a company is paying more than it earns, then the dividend might become unsustainable - hardly an ideal situation. So we need to form a view on if a company's dividend is sustainable, relative to its net profit after tax. In the last year, China Communications Construction paid out 20% of its profit as dividends. Given the low payout ratio, it is hard to envision the dividend coming under threat, barring a catastrophe. Another important check we do is to see if the free cash flow generated is sufficient to pay the dividend. Last year, China Communications Construction paid a dividend while reporting negative free cash flow. While there may be an explanation, we think this behaviour is generally not sustainable. It's positive to see that China Communications Construction's dividend is covered by both profits and cash flow, since this is generally a sign that the dividend is sustainable, and a lower payout ratio usually suggests a greater margin of safety before the dividend gets cut. Is China Communications Construction's Balance Sheet Risky? As China Communications Construction has a meaningful amount of debt, we need to check its balance sheet to see if the company might have debt risks. A rough way to check this is with these two simple ratios: a) net debt divided by EBITDA (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation), and b) net interest cover. … Looking at the last decade of data, we can see that China Communications Construction paid its first dividend at least nine years ago. … We'd also point out that China Communications Construction issued a meaningful number of new shares in the past year.
