Passive investing in an index fund is a good way to ensure your own returns roughly match the overall market. While individual stocks can be big winners, plenty more fail to generate satisfactory returns. For example, the Milestone Builder Holdings Limited (HKG:1667) share price is down 32% in the last year. That contrasts poorly with the market return of -4.2%. Because Milestone Builder Holdings hasn’t been listed for many years, the market is still learning about how the business performs. Shareholders have had an even rougher run lately, with the share price down 13% in the last 90 days. However, one could argue that the price has been influenced by the general market, which is down 9.7% in the same timeframe.
There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
Even though the Milestone Builder Holdings share price is down over the year, its EPS actually improved. It could be that the share price was previously over-hyped. It’s surprising to see the share price fall so much, despite the improved EPS. But we might find some different metrics explain the share price movements better.
In contrast, the 7.5% drop in revenue is a real concern. Many investors see falling revenue as a likely precursor to lower earnings, so this could well explain the weak share price.

A Different Perspective
Milestone Builder Holdings shareholders are down 32% for the year, even worse than the market loss of 4.2%. There’s no doubt that’s a disappointment, but the stock may well have fared better in a stronger market. With the stock down 13% over the last three months, the market doesn’t seem to believe that the company has solved all its problems. Given the relatively short history of this stock, we’d remain pretty wary until we see some strong business performance.
