There Are Reasons To Feel Uneasy About IBI Group Holdings' (HKG:1547) Returns On Capital
If you're not sure where to start when looking for the next multi-bagger, there are a few key trends you should keep an eye out for. Ideally, a business will show two trends; firstly a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an increasing amount of capital employed. If you see this, it typically means it's a company with a great business model and plenty of profitable reinvestment opportunities. However, after investigating IBI Group Holdings (HKG:1547), we don't think it's current trends fit the mold of a multi-bagger.
Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)
For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. The formula for this calculation on IBI Group Holdings is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.085 = HK$14m ÷ (HK$373m - HK$205m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2025).
Thus, IBI Group Holdings has an ROCE of 8.5%. In absolute terms, that's a low return, but it's much better than the Construction industry average of 5.5%.

What The Trend Of ROCE Can Tell Us
On the surface, the trend of ROCE at IBI Group Holdings doesn't inspire confidence. To be more specific, ROCE has fallen from 18% over the last five years. And considering revenue has dropped while employing more capital, we'd be cautious. If this were to continue, you might be looking at a company that is trying to reinvest for growth but is actually losing market share since sales haven't increased.
On a side note, IBI Group Holdings has done well to pay down its current liabilities to 55% of total assets. So we could link some of this to the decrease in ROCE. What's more, this can reduce some aspects of risk to the business because now the company's suppliers or short-term creditors are funding less of its operations. Some would claim this reduces the business' efficiency at generating ROCE since it is now funding more of the operations with its own money. Either way, they're still at a pretty high level, so we'd like to see them fall further if possible.
Our Take On IBI Group Holdings' ROCE
From the above analysis, we find it rather worrisome that returns on capital and sales for IBI Group Holdings have fallen, meanwhile the business is employing more capital than it was five years ago. However the stock has delivered a 42% return to shareholders over the last five years, so investors might be expecting the trends to turn around. In any case, the current underlying trends don't bode well for long term performance so unless they reverse, we'd start looking elsewhere.
On a final note, we found 3 warning signs for IBI Group Holdings (1 is concerning) you should be aware of.
