There's No Escaping Y/Knot Invest S.A.'s (ATH:YKNOT) Muted Revenues Despite A 28% Share Price Rise

Y/Knot Invest S.A. (ATH:YKNOT) shareholders have had their patience rewarded with a 28% share price jump in the last month. The last month tops off a massive increase of 193% in the last year.

Even after such a large jump in price, when around half the companies operating in Greece's Hospitality industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") above 4.3x, you may still consider Y/Knot Invest as an incredibly enticing stock to check out with its 0.9x P/S ratio. However, the P/S might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Y/Knot Invest Has Been Performing

For instance, Y/Knot Invest's receding revenue in recent times would have to be some food for thought. It might be that many expect the disappointing revenue performance to continue or accelerate, which has repressed the P/S. Those who are bullish on Y/Knot Invest will be hoping that this isn't the case so that they can pick up the stock at a lower valuation.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as depressed as Y/Knot Invest's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry decidedly.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 45%. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 18% overall. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Weighing that medium-term revenue trajectory against the broader industry's one-year forecast for expansion of 8.1% shows it's an unpleasant look.

With this in mind, we understand why Y/Knot Invest's P/S is lower than most of its industry peers. However, we think shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term, which could set up shareholders for future disappointment. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as recent revenue trends are already weighing down the shares.

What We Can Learn From Y/Knot Invest's P/S?

Y/Knot Invest's recent share price jump still sees fails to bring its P/S alongside the industry median. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

As we suspected, our examination of Y/Knot Invest revealed its shrinking revenue over the medium-term is contributing to its low P/S, given the industry is set to grow. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises either. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
