Investors ignore increasing losses at MaxCyte (LON:MXCT) as stock jumps 16% this past week
It might be of some concern to shareholders to see the MaxCyte, Inc. (LON:MXCT) share price down 10% in the last month. But in stark contrast, the returns over the last half decade have impressed. Indeed, the share price is up an impressive 182% in that time. Generally speaking the long term returns will give you a better idea of business quality than short periods can. Ultimately business performance will determine whether the stock price continues the positive long term trend. Unfortunately not all shareholders will have held it for five years, so spare a thought for those caught in the 68% decline over the last three years: that's a long time to wait for profits.
Since the stock has added UK£49m to its market cap in the past week alone, let's see if underlying performance has been driving long-term returns.

MaxCyte wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally hope to see good revenue growth. That's because fast revenue growth can be easily extrapolated to forecast profits, often of considerable size.
For the last half decade, MaxCyte can boast revenue growth at a rate of 18% per year. Even measured against other revenue-focussed companies, that's a good result. So it's not entirely surprising that the share price reflected this performance by increasing at a rate of 23% per year, in that time. This suggests the market has well and truly recognized the progress the business has made. MaxCyte seems like a high growth stock - so growth investors might want to add it to their watchlist.

It's probably worth noting we've seen significant insider buying in the last quarter, which we consider a positive. That said, we think earnings and revenue growth trends are even more important factors to consider. A Different Perspective
Investors in MaxCyte had a tough year, with a total loss of 9.1%, against a market gain of about 13%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 23%, each year, over five years. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 3 warning signs with MaxCyte (at least 2 which are concerning) , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
