Over the last year, a good number of insiders have significantly increased their holdings in Burford Capital Limited (LON:BUR). This is encouraging because it indicates that insiders are more optimistic about the company's prospects.
Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Burford Capital
In the last twelve months, the biggest single purchase by an insider was when CEO & Director Christopher Bogart bought UK£499k worth of shares at a price of UK£6.43 per share. That implies that an insider found the current price of UK£6.78 per share to be enticing. That means they have been optimistic about the company in the past, though they may have changed their mind. While we always like to see insider buying, it's less meaningful if the purchases were made at much lower prices, as the opportunity they saw may have passed. In this case we're pleased to report that the insider purchases were made at close to current prices.

Insider Ownership
I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. It's great to see that Burford Capital insiders own 8.2% of the company, worth about UK£122m. Most shareholders would be happy to see this sort of insider ownership, since it suggests that management incentives are well aligned with other shareholders.
