When you buy a stock there is always a possibility that it could drop 100%. But when you pick a company that is really flourishing, you can make more than 100%. Long term PPHE Hotel Group Limited (LON:PPH) shareholders would be well aware of this, since the stock is up 108% in five years. It's also good to see the share price up 20% over the last quarter. But this move may well have been assisted by the reasonably buoyant market (up 9.0% in 90 days).

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

PPHE Hotel Group's earnings per share are down 34% per year, despite strong share price performance over five years.

This means it's unlikely the market is judging the company based on earnings growth. Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.

We are not particularly impressed by the annual compound revenue growth of 0.6% over five years. So why is the share price up? It's not immediately obvious to us, but a closer look at the company's progress over time might yield answers.

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

We'd be remiss not to mention the difference between PPHE Hotel Group's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price return. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Its history of dividend payouts mean that PPHE Hotel Group's TSR of 156% over the last 5 years is better than the share price return.

A Different Perspective

We're pleased to report that PPHE Hotel Group shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 46% over one year. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 21% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. In the best case scenario, this may hint at some real business momentum, implying that now could be a great time to delve deeper. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Consider risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 1 warning sign for PPHE Hotel Group you should know about.
