Even after rising 11% this past week, LACROIX Group (EPA:LACR) shareholders are still down 45% over the past five years
LACROIX Group SA (EPA:LACR) shareholders will doubtless be very grateful to see the share price up 44% in the last quarter. But if you look at the last five years the returns have not been good. After all, the share price is down 51% in that time, significantly under-performing the market.
The recent uptick of 11% could be a positive sign of things to come, so let's take a look at historical fundamentals.
To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
In the last half decade LACROIX Group saw its share price fall as its EPS declined below zero. At present it's hard to make valid comparisons between EPS and the share price. However, we can say we'd expect to see a falling share price in this scenario.
The image below shows how EPS has tracked over time (if you click on the image you can see greater detail).

A Dividend Lost
The share price return figures discussed above don't include the value of dividends paid previously, but the total shareholder return (TSR) does. In some ways, TSR is a better measure of how well an investment has performed. LACROIX Group's TSR over the last 5 years is -45%; better than its share price return. Although the company had to cut dividends, it has paid cash to shareholders in the past.
A Different Perspective
While the broader market gained around 13% in the last year, LACROIX Group shareholders lost 0.8%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Unfortunately, longer term shareholders are suffering worse, given the loss of 8% doled out over the last five years. We would want clear information suggesting the company will grow, before taking the view that the share price will stabilize. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. For instance, we've identified 3 warning signs for LACROIX Group (1 makes us a bit uncomfortable) that you should be aware of.
