Investors Aren't Entirely Convinced By Deezer S.A.'s (EPA:DEEZR) Revenues

With a price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.3x Deezer S.A. (EPA:DEEZR) may be sending bullish signals at the moment, given that almost half of all the Entertainment companies in France have P/S ratios greater than 1.1x and even P/S higher than 4x are not unusual. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does Deezer's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

Deezer certainly has been doing a good job lately as its revenue growth has been positive while most other companies have been seeing their revenue go backwards. Perhaps the market is expecting future revenue performance to follow the rest of the industry downwards, which has kept the P/S suppressed. Those who are bullish on Deezer will be hoping that this isn't the case and the company continues to beat out the industry.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Deezer would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a worthy increase of 4.1%. The solid recent performance means it was also able to grow revenue by 28% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been respectable for the company.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 14% per year as estimated by the three analysts watching the company. With the industry only predicted to deliver 11% per year, the company is positioned for a stronger revenue result.

In light of this, it's peculiar that Deezer's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.

What We Can Learn From Deezer's P/S?

It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

A look at Deezer's revenues reveals that, despite glowing future growth forecasts, its P/S is much lower than we'd expect. There could be some major risk factors that are placing downward pressure on the P/S ratio. It appears the market could be anticipating revenue instability, because these conditions should normally provide a boost to the share price.
