Market Participants Recognise Tarkett S.A.'s (EPA:TKTT) Revenues Pushing Shares 38% Higher
Tarkett S.A. (EPA:TKTT) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 38% gain in the last month alone. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 64% in the last year.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, there still wouldn't be many who think Tarkett's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.3x is worth a mention when the median P/S in France's Building industry is similar at about 0.6x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

How Tarkett Has Been Performing
We'd have to say that with no tangible growth over the last year, Tarkett's revenue has been unimpressive. Perhaps the market believes the recent run-of-the-mill revenue performance isn't enough to outperform the industry, which has kept the P/S muted. If not, then existing shareholders may be feeling hopeful about the future direction of the share price.

The only time you'd be comfortable seeing a P/S like Tarkett's is when the company's growth is tracking the industry closely.
Taking a look back first, we see that there was hardly any revenue growth to speak of for the company over the past year. Fortunately, a few good years before that means that it was still able to grow revenue by 19% in total over the last three years. So it appears to us that the company has had a mixed result in terms of growing revenue over that time.
It's interesting to note that the rest of the industry is similarly expected to grow by 5.3% over the next year, which is fairly even with the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.
With this information, we can see why Tarkett is trading at a fairly similar P/S to the industry. Apparently shareholders are comfortable to simply hold on assuming the company will continue keeping a low profile.
The Final Word
Its shares have lifted substantially and now Tarkett's P/S is back within range of the industry median. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
It appears to us that Tarkett maintains its moderate P/S off the back of its recent three-year growth being in line with the wider industry forecast. Currently, with a past revenue trend that aligns closely wit the industry outlook, shareholders are confident the company's future revenue outlook won't contain any major surprises. Given the current circumstances, it seems improbable that the share price will experience any significant movement in either direction in the near future if recent medium-term revenue trends persist.
