The truth is that if you invest for long enough, you're going to end up with some losing stocks. But long term Latécoère S.A. (EPA:LAT) shareholders have had a particularly rough ride in the last three year. Unfortunately, they have held through a 68% decline in the share price in that time. And more recent buyers are having a tough time too, with a drop of 24% in the last year. Unfortunately the share price momentum is still quite negative, with prices down 26% in thirty days.

Latécoère wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. That's because fast revenue growth can be easily extrapolated to forecast profits, often of considerable size.

Over the last three years, Latécoère's revenue dropped 8.1% per year. That is not a good result. The share price decline of 19% compound, over three years, is understandable given the company doesn't have profits to boast of, and revenue is moving in the wrong direction. Of course, it's the future that will determine whether today's price is a good one. We'd be pretty wary of this one until it makes a profit, because we don't specialize in finding turnaround situations.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market gained around 34% in the last year, Latécoère shareholders lost 24%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 10% over the last half decade. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 1 warning sign with Latécoère , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
