Vaisala Oyj's (HEL:VAIAS) Dividend Will Be Increased To €0.85
Vaisala Oyj (HEL:VAIAS) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 3rd of April to €0.85. This takes the annual payment to 1.7% of the current stock price, which is about average for the industry.

Vaisala Oyj's Payment Could Potentially Have Solid Earnings Coverage
We like a dividend to be consistent over the long term, so checking whether it is sustainable is important. Based on the last payment, Vaisala Oyj's earnings were much higher than the dividend, but it wasn't converting those earnings into cash flow. In general, we consider cash flow to be more important than earnings, so we would be cautious about relying on the sustainability of this dividend.
The next year is set to see EPS grow by 41.8%. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 36% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.
Vaisala Oyj Has A Solid Track Record
The company has a sustained record of paying dividends with very little fluctuation. The annual payment during the last 10 years was €0.45 in 2015, and the most recent fiscal year payment was €0.85. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 6.6% a year over that time. The dividend has been growing very nicely for a number of years, and has given its shareholders some nice income in their portfolios.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
Some investors will be chomping at the bit to buy some of the company's stock based on its dividend history. It's encouraging to see that Vaisala Oyj has been growing its earnings per share at 13% a year over the past five years. The company is paying out a lot of its cash as a dividend, but it looks okay based on the payout ratio.
In Summary
Overall, we always like to see the dividend being raised, but we don't think Vaisala Oyj will make a great income stock. While the low payout ratio is a redeeming feature, this is offset by the minimal cash to cover the payments. We don't think Vaisala Oyj is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.
Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one.
